An Open Book:
A Hand in the Archive
In 2013, I was invited to be the artist-in-residence at Brooklyn Public Library. Working closely with librarians in the Brooklyn Collection, Ivy Marvel and Ben Gocker; I was given complete access to the Central Library building and its picture collections.
My project was an exploration of the library archive with particular attention to its holdings that pertain to the Central Library building. Sometimes I photographed in response to archival materials I found striking; other times, I focused on areas that were underrepresented in the archive, including the areas that house the archive itself. I decided to portray the picture collection in the hands of the archivists, its caretakers over time--at this historic moment when archives are increasingly transitioning from analog to digital modes of preserving the past.
